"Mr. Joyce is waiting for me in the dining room as I am now his self appointed volunteer secretary. The large table is littered with notes and books of reference, with encyclopedias. All the lights are burning brightly although the room itself is light and sunny. Wearing an old white starched linen jacket, often stained with ink and sometimes with food, Babbo was so nearly sightless that even eating was not easy for him. He would rise to greet me as I entered. Nora would welcome me and then vanish into her own room. Lucia would wave to me on her way to a dancing class."
